Asbestos claims and the economy

Scottish economy could face a devastating effect of asbestos exposure-related claims. The warning came as delegates from the construction industry attended Donald McGREGOR seminar in Glasgow today (4 December) and was told that the experiment in the United States could indicate that asbestos litigation time bomb for the Scottish economy.

Gavin Patton, associate McGREGOR Donald construction and engineering group warned that the United Kingdom could follow a similar pattern of asbestos litigation in the United States, where many companies had left went bankrupt as a result.

"The United States has experienced a surge in asbestos-related claims, leaving a number of bankrupt companies. Although there is concern that this trend might filter across the Atlantic, especially with increasing claims culture United Kingdom, there are some basic differences between the United States and United Kingdom law and legal procedures. These differences mean that the experience in the United Kingdom is not likely to be destructive.

"Although it's impossible to prevent claims being made, it is important that companies comply with the requirements of legislation and remember records so they can establish that they have taken steps such as providing workers with masks and implement and maintain risk management procedures."
